South Africa CBERS series satellite ground receiving stationPublishDate:2022-07-27

  In 2007, at the Fourth Plenary Session and Fourth Ministerial Summit of the International Organization for Earth Observation (GEO), Wan Gang, Minister of Science and Technology of the People's Republic of China, announced the decision to share the data of the resource-1 satellite 02B satellite (CBERS-02B) in Africa and authorized China Resource Satellite Application Center to establish a CBERS-02B data receiving station in South Africa, and conduct data processing, storage and distribution, and further promote it in other African countries after the results are achieved.

  The South African CBERS-02B receiving and processing system has been put into operation since the beginning of 2009, achieving a breakthrough in the overseas landing and distribution of China's resource satellite data. In April 2010, during President Hu Jintao's visit to Brazil, the two governments signed the "CBERS Data Global Data Distribution Agreement", which determined the global distribution policy of CBERS series satellite data. In December 2010, CRESDA, Brazil and South Africa signed a memorandum of understanding for the data reception and distribution of the CBERS-04 satellite in South Africa at the inauguration ceremony of the South African Space Agency. In 2011, the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People's Republic of China included the South African Station Construction (Phase II) project into an international scientific and technological cooperation project. In December 2015, the South African ground system of the CBERS-04 satellite developed by the China Resources Satellite Application Center was officially put into operation.

  The CBERS series of satellite ground receiving stations have enabled 13 countries in southern Africa (with a total area of about 20.47 million square kilometers) to use the data of the CBERS satellites and applied in desert governance, land use, resource development, natural disasters and ecological environment monitoring, urban and transportation infrastructure construction and other fields, and actively promote local economic and social development. The successful implementation of this project also expanded the international cooperation between China and South Africa in the field of remote sensing, and contributed to China-Africa scientific and technological cooperation.
